Seeing Beyond the Pain: How Emotional Trauma Can Affect Your Eyesight

As a seasoned expert in Childhood Trauma, Inner Resilience and Wellness, I’ve dedicated my career to uncovering the hidden ways our past experiences shape our present selves. Today, I invite you to explore a less commonly discussed but profoundly significant topic: the intriguing link between emotional trauma and eyesight and something that personally affected me.

Unveiling the Connection

While it may seem surprising, emerging research and clinical observations suggest that emotional trauma, particularly from childhood, can have a tangible impact on our visual health. This connection underscores the profound interplay between our emotional and physical well-being.

Psychological Impact on Physical Sight

  1. Stress and Eye Health: Chronic stress, a common consequence of unresolved trauma, can lead to high blood pressure and other circulatory problems, which in turn may affect the tiny blood vessels in the eyes, potentially leading to conditions such as hypertensive retinopathy.
  2. Hyperarousal and Eye Strain: The state of constant alertness (hyperarousal) and poor sleep is associated with PTSD and other trauma-related conditions can strain the visual system, leading to symptoms like blurred vision and eye fatigue.
  3. Dissociative Reactions: Some individuals who have experienced trauma may manifest dissociative symptoms, which can include disruptions in how they process visual information, sometimes causing temporary visual distortions or impairments.

Real-Life Implications

Consider the story of Emily, who experienced an Adverse Childhood Experience. As an adult, she often found herself struggling with episodes of blurred vision, dark spots and floaty spots during times of emotional stress.

After losing her eyesight in one eye temporarily, she saw several eye specialists who wanted her to have an operation as they she was at a high risk of a detached retina (which, she was told, could happen anytime).

However, she took the decision not to have the operation, as something in her gut was informing her of the root reasons – and that it was related to high episodes of stress in her life at that time and related to her unresolved emotional trauma.

The reality is, that was my experience. However, I always recommend you seek specialists and make your own decisions not based on my experience but on what is recommended and right for you.

My reality is, I’m a great believer in visualised healing and connection with something greater than us, that when we slow down and listen, they are our biggest guides in life. I have personally used this approach many times in my own health and wellness journey, as well as listening to my gut on how to work through life with stress management techniques without medical or medicinal intervention.
